Residents in the south advised of water disruption following leak in Blackbird Avenue, Parkwood

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate has been alerted to a leak on the 915mm diameter bulk reticulation water main in Blackbird Avenue, Parkwood. Read more below for details including the list of affected areas
The leak is due to an air valve that was vandalised and repairing it will necessitate shutting off the water supply, impacting a significant portion of the southern areas of the city.
The team is on site to assess the extent of the damage.
What residents can expect?
- Water supply will be shut off at 15:00 today, Sunday 21 April.
- Once this happens, as the system is slowly being emptied of the water, residents will start to over time experience low to no water pressure.
- Residents are advised to store water in advance as work will continue throughout the night and tomorrow.
- The situation will be assessed tomorrow (Monday 22 April) and water tankers will be made available if needed.
Areas to be affected include:
Pelican Park, Eagle Park, New Horizon, Peacock Close, Pelican Heights, Strandfontein, San Remo, Bay View, Phumlani, Zeekoevlei, Grassy Park, Lotus River, Schaapkraal, Ottery, Wetton, Knole Park, Retreat, Heathfield, Steenberg, Elfindale, Marina Da Gama, Lavender Hill, Seawinds, Vrygrond, Parkwood Estate, Fairways, Southfield, Plumstead, Wynberg, Muizenberg, Lakeside, Westlake, Kirstenhof and Diep River areas.
We apologise for the inconvenience caused to all affected residents. We understand that this will impact a large area of the city. However, responding and repairing this vandalism quickly is necessary for the city to do in order to protect our water infrastructure.
The Water and Sanitation Directorate will issue regular communication via the ward councillors to keep residents updated with the progress being made.
What residents need to know about planned water supply disruptions:
1. Please kindly store enough water in clean sealed containers for domestic use
that will last during this period.
2. Please keep your taps closed to prevent any water loss and/or damage when
the water supply is restored.
3. For a short period, after supply has been restored, the water may be discoloured
or look milky. This is because of trapped air in the pipes. If left to stand in a glass, the
appearance will become clear, like normal.
4. Please be advised that all sites where water and sanitation repairs and upgrades
are conducted are deemed to be construction sites and, as such are off-limits to
members of the public.
